The sentence 'Beowulf was able to kill Grendel's mother.' means that he could kill her with lots of difficulty, not easily, especially considering that Grendel's mother could turn to a gorgeous and physically attractive tempting yet powerful woman and had the ability to lure any man to accompany her in bed, including Beowulf. He did it once, which resulted the birth of Grendels, the huge dreadful scary monster.
Such story can be seen in the animated movie entitled 'Beowulf' starring Ray Winstone and Angelina Jolie in mid 2000s.
